The RedMagic 7S Pro is now available globally including the USA and Canada. This particular mid-year upgrade is not very different from the excellent RedMagic 7 Pro launched earlier in 2o22.
Changes that Nubia has made on the newer smartphone include a new back cover, box artwork, and a newer more powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. So, let’s dive into the unboxing to see what upgrades Nubia has made with their latest gaming smartphone.
RedMagic 7S Pro Unboxing
The unboxing experience has now been the same for almost a year and a half. It was quite difficult to notice the differences as they are subtle. I have a section later in the review showing the subtle differences between the 7S Pro and the older RedMagic 7 Pro.
Inside the retail box are the smartphone, the 65W GaN charging brick, a hefty red color USB-C cable, and a clear TPU case along with paperwork and a SIM tool.
Subtle Hardware Design Changes on the RedMagic 7S Pro
Most of the previous RedMagic devices have been the top-end versions so I get the transparent back cover with the LED cooling fan. This time around Nubia sent us the base 12GB/256GB Obsidian Black version of the RedMagic 7S Pro smartphone for review.
Having used the device for a bit, I actually like the non-transparent Obsidian Black version quite a bit. I don’t think from a looks perspective, anyone is getting shortchanged by buying the base version of the RedMagic 7S Pro.
Aside from the back cover and some very subtle rail changes to the touch triggers this phone is virtually indistinguishable from the RedMagic 7 Pro. The antenna lines, buttons, cooling vent, red gaming slider, SIM tray slot, headphone jack, and speaker grilles are all exactly the same.
On the front, we have the same uninterrupted flat 6.8″ 120Hz refresh rate display. The selfie camera is hidden extremely well underneath the display. This is because Nubia gets the benefit of the latest and greatest UD selfie camera technology from the parent company ZTE. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra that we reviewed a little while ago has the best under-display selfie camera on the market currently.
RedMagic 7S Pro is the best Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 smartphone from a performance standpoint
RedMagic 7S Pro uses the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. Our 12GB RAM review unit has had the best Geekbench 5 scores of any smartphone in 2022. It outperforms other gaming phones with the same processor and 12GB of RAM, like the iQOO 9T and the Realme GT2 Explorer Master. Despite having less RAM than the predecessor, RedMagic 7S Pro with the newer chip handily beats the single and multi-core Geekbench 5 scores of the RedMagic 7 Pro.
If you buy this phone for gaming, you will absolutely not be disappointed. From the excellent flat display to the great speakers to the superlative performance you can play any game currently out at the highest settings without any hiccups whatsoever. Oh and there’s even a headphone jack so you can play without disturbing anyone around you.
Another improvement RedMagic has made is to include a graphene-based thermal storage layer in the ICE cooling system. With the improved ICE 10.0 cooling system and the 20K RPM fan, the phone can sustain gaming at the highest settings for almost 45 minutes before getting warm to the touch.
Battery life is great thanks to the newer Snapdragon processor
RedMagic 7S Pro packs a 5000 mAh battery and comes with a 65W GaN charging brick. This is the same as previous RedMagic devices. However, the newer Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 is a more efficient processor which uses the 4nm TSMC process. This results in improved battery life which is definitely a plus in my book. So this phone should definitely last a full day with an hour or so of hardcore gaming without needing to be charged.
As usual, there’s also a passthrough mode available to play games while keeping the device plugged into a wall outlet. It is great to have gaming-specific battery management options and Nubia has paid attention to the little details.
Software, cameras, and audio are all a carryover from the previous generation
RedMagic 7S Pro software is Android 12 and has the newer security patch and cleaned-up gaming menus. Otherwise, I wasn’t able to discern any difference in daily use between the 7S Pro and the 7 Pro from a few months ago.
The triple camera module is also a carryover from the last generation and so is the selfie camera on the front. I do think that Nubia needs to pay a bit more attention to the camera department for the next version as this hardware and software is now over two years old. Chek out our review of the RedMagic 7 Pro for camera samples including a Flickr gallery.
Another thing that is a carryover is the audio hardware. You still get very loud speakers that sound excellent, and there’s even a headphone jack available on the RedMagic 7S Pro!
There’s Excellent 5G connectivity on the RedMagic 7S Pro in the USA
The RedMagic 7S Pro instantly got VoLTE 5G signal as soon as I put in my T-Mobile SIM card. I did not have to manually toggle 5G on like the RedMagic 7 Pro which is great as it is one less step for the end user. The 7S Pro also has built-in VoWiFi support which I tested in a few locations with a poor cellular signal.
All other day-to-day stuff had zero issues, this includes calls, music streaming, app downloads, or catching up on the Netflix queue or YouTube subscriptions. Contactless payments via NFC are a breeze with Google Pay. You will find that this smartphone has all the connectivity options you will need on a daily basis and more.

The RedMagic 7S Pro is one of the best gaming smartphones you can buy in 2022
The RedMagic 7S Pro base version in Obsidian Black is one of the best gaming smartphones you can buy in 2022. For $729 you get top-of-the-line performance, excellent audio options, stellar thermal management, a fast and responsive display, and very good battery life.
I am quite happy that Nubia has lowered the base price by $70 making this one of the cheapest gaming smartphones out there. Granted, the camera experience could be better. On the flip side, Nubia has improved the software bugs from the previous versions. So, for gaming enthusiasts with a limited budget, the RedMagic 7S Pro is an excellent choice in 2022.
