Galaxy S22 series will miss out on these Expert RAW features

Samsung introduced several new camera features with the Galaxy S23 series earlier this year. Some of them have already reached older Galaxy models, including the Galaxy S22 series, while some others are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, not every new feature will trickle down to older Galaxy devices. 360 audio recording and high-resolution shooting in Expert RAW are among the features that will remain exclusive to the Galaxy S23 series.
The Galaxy S22 series will not get 360 audio recording
Earlier this month, Samsung took to its community forums to announce that it’s in the process of bringing Galaxy S23 camera features to other eligible models. A user commented on that thread to require if the company plans to push the 360 audio recording feature to the Galaxy S22 series. This feature lets you record 360-degree audio while capturing videos. They pointed out that the 2022 flagships have a high bitrate option but no 360-degree support.
In response, a Samsung moderator in charge of camera-related queries said that the company has no plan to support 360 audio recording on the Galaxy S22 series. They didn’t provide further explanation about whether it’s due to compatibility issues or if there’s some other reason.
With the Galaxy S22 lineup not getting this feature, it’s safe to assume that no other Galaxy device will. The 360 audio recording feature will be available only on the Galaxy S23 series and future models.
Older Galaxies also miss out on high-resolution shooting in Expert RAW
The same user also questioned whether the Galaxy S22 lineup will get high-resolution shooting (50MP/108MP) in the Expert RAW app. Sadly, it won’t. According to the moderator, it will be too taxing on the phones’ processors. “Expert RAW provides 16-bit raw images through multi-frame processing,” and enabling high-resolution shooting will make it “difficult to provide general usability due to processing time and memory usage,” they said.
The forum moderator also confirmed that the Galaxy S22 series will not get RAW format support in normal mode. The reason is the small pixel size. The pixels are “too small and the amount of light received is insufficient, so it is impossible to guarantee image quality in all lighting conditions”.
As for the new features that will reach the Galaxy S22 series, you can look forward to front camera support in Pro/Pro Video mode and Expert RAW, Astro Hyperlapse of the night sky at 300x speed, and improved lens switching. We will let you know when these updates roll out.
