Samsung confirms it's working to make foldables dustproof

Samsung tried making the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 dustproof, but couldn’t overcome the technical difficulties to achieve the goal. The confirmation came from the company’s mobile head TM Roh, who revealed the plans during a press conference after last week’s Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea. Alongside the two new foldables, the event also brought the Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch 6 series.
Samsung is working to make dustproof foldable smartphones
Samsung’s 2021 foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, were the world’s first foldable devices to feature an official IP (ingress protection) rating for water resistance. Other brands have since achieved waterproofing too. A few have since gone on to add dust proofing as well. However, Samsung has yet to launch a foldable device with an official dust resistance rating. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 were rumored to be the first to it, but things didn’t materialize.
The Korean firm has now opened up on what happened. According to Roh, Samsung is “well aware” of consumer demand for dustproof foldable smartphones. It is making “various efforts” to achieve this design. However, the complex nature of these unconventional phones, which require open areas and a hinge with several moving parts, makes it difficult to completely block dust particles from seeping inside them.
Both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 have brushes and other preventive measures to stop dust from entering the inside of the phone as much as possible. But Samsung can’t guarantee that no dust will reach the internals of these phones, so no official IP rating. On the bright side, Galaxy foldables weren’t water-resistant from the beginning. As said earlier, the third-gen models were the first to get waterproofing.
Roh pointed to this fact, saying that Samsung “set a new standard for foldable phones” when it made them water resistant. He is hopeful that the company can do it again with dust resistance in the future. “Please wait a little longer,” the head of the Korean firm’s mobile division said (via Bizwatch). Time will tell whether the 2024 Galaxy foldables boast an official IP rating for dust resistance.
Samsung has high hopes for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5
Samsung has set big ambitions for its latest foldables. The company expects the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 to help it grow its foldables sales by 50 percent this year, reaching 15 million units globally. The whole market is projected to reach 20 million shipments in 2023. That means Samsung is aiming to capture 75 percent of it. We’ll have to wait and see whether it achieves the target. The new foldables are currently available for pre-order, with sales beginning on August 11.The post Samsung confirms it’s working to make foldables dustproof appeared first on Android Headlines.
