Phone Comparisons: Google Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung Galaxy S24 Specs

It’s time to compare the very best smartphone Google has to offer with one of Samsung’s offerings. We’ll be comparing the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung Galaxy S24 specs. The Galaxy S24 is no longer the company’s best compact smartphone, that crown is now held by the Galaxy S25. However, the Galaxy S24 is still a compelling offering, and it’ll be interesting to see how it compares to Google’s large-format foldable.

These two smartphones are different on a number of levels. They don’t have all that much in common, which should make this whole ordeal a bit more interesting. We’ll first list the specs of both phones. Following that, we’ll compare their designs, displays, performance, battery life, cameras, and audio output. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung Galaxy S24: Design

Albeit there are some design similarities between these two, they do look different. You’ll find a flat display on both phones, with uniform bezels around it. The bezels are slightly thinner on the Galaxy S24. You’ll notice that the display camera hole sits up top on both phones, though it’s smaller on the Galaxy S24. Both smartphones have a flat frame all around, though it’s slightly rounded towards the edges, for comfort’s sake.

All the physical buttons are on the right-hand side of both smartphones. On the Pixel 9 Pro XL, the power/lock key sits above the volume up and down buttons. It’s the other way around on the Samsung Galaxy S24. You will notice that both devices also have a flat backplate, but rather different camera setups. The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL includes a camera bar on the back, a horizontal one, up top. There are three cameras included in there. The Galaxy S24 has three vertically aligned cameras in the top-left corner, and each of them protrudes directly from the backplate.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL is considerably larger than the Galaxy S24, as it has a larger display. It is taller, wider, and thicker than the Galaxy S24, while also being 54 grams heavier. Both smartphones are quite slippery, as they’re made out of metal and glass. Both of them are also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung Galaxy S24: Display

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL includes a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display. That panel has an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz), and a resolution of 2992 x 1344. That display is also flat, and it supports HDR10+ content. The peak brightness you’re able to get here is 3,000 nits, in theory. The screen-to-body ratio is at around 88%, while the display aspect ratio is 20:9. Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects this panel.

Samsung Galaxy S24

Samsung’s handset, on the other hand, includes a 6.2-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X display. That panel is also flat, and it supports an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz). HDR10+ content is also supported, while the peak brightness is 2,600 nits. The resolution here is 2340 x 1080, while the screen-to-body ratio is at around 90%. The display aspect ratio is 19.5:9, while the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects this panel.

Both of these displays are solid. They’re vivid, have good viewing angles, and they’re sharp enough. The blacks are also deep on both of them, and both displays get bright enough. The Pixel 9 Pro XL’s display does have the advantage of being sharper, but it’s also quite larger. You won’t be missing sharpness on the Galaxy S24, not at all. Neither display has a particularly high high-frequency PWM dimming, by the way.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung Galaxy S24: Performance

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is fueled by the Google Tensor G4 processor. That is Google’s 4nm chip, and the most powerful one the company has to offer now. It is paired with 16GB of RAM inside the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Google is also using UFS 3.1 flash storage here. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy and Exynos 2400 SoCs fuels the Galaxy S24, it all depends on where you buy it. Either way, 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM is included, along with UFS 4.0 flash storage. Well, unless you get the 128GB storage option, then you’ll get UFS 3.1 storage.

Both devices to offer really good performance. Neither one of these chips is the absolute best these days, but they’re plenty powerful. Both smartphones are very fluid in day-to-day operation. They open apps really fast, while they can also quickly jump between them. Multimedia consumption is not a problem, and the same goes for browsing, messaging, and everything else you’ll be doing while using them.

What about gaming? Well, the Galaxy S24 is definitely the better phone for gaming. Its processor is more oriented towards it, while the phone itself also has some gaming features. The Pixel 9 Pro XL can run games without a problem, but when it comes to high-end, graphically intensive games, the Galaxy S24 is the better option.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung Galaxy S24: Battery

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL includes a 5,060mAh battery on the inside. The Galaxy S24, on the other hand, has a 4,000mAh battery pack. Google’s handset is considerably larger, so the larger battery pack is not that surprising. When it comes to battery life, the Pixel 9 Pro XL has the upper hand. For us, that phone delivered a lot better battery life in comparison, with around 2 extra hours of screen-on time.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 doesn’t have bad battery life, it’s just not as good as we’d want it to be. Getting around 6 hours of screen-on time is not a problem, though, even a bit more than that, as long as you’re not gaming all that much. The Pixel 9 Pro XL goes way beyond that. Do note that we used the Snapdragon version of the Galaxy S24, so we don’t really know what the Exynos 2400 variant delivers in terms of battery life.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL supports 37W wired, 23W wireless (with Pixel Stand), 12W wireless (Qi), and 5W reverse wireless charging. The Galaxy S24, on the other hand, supports 25W wired, 15W wireless (Qi), and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. It takes the Pixel 9 Pro XL around an hour and 20 minutes to fully charge. The Galaxy S24 is a bit quicker at an hour and 15 minutes, thanks to a much smaller battery. Neither phone ships with a charger in the box, though.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung Galaxy S24: Cameras

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL includes three cameras on the back. A 50-megapixel main camera (1/1.31-inch sensor size) is backed by a 48-megapixel ultrawide unit (1/2.55-inch sensor size, 123-degree FoV). The third camera on the back is a 48-megapixel periscope telephoto snapper (1/2.55-inch sensor size, 5x optical zoom).

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL

The Samsung Galaxy S24, on the flip side, has three cameras on the back too. A 50-megapixel main snapper (1/1.56-inch sensor size) is joined by a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (1/2.55-inch sensor size, 120-degree FoV) and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (1/3.94-inch sensor size, 3x optical zoom).

Google’s handset has superior camera hardware here. That goes for all three cameras, basically. Does that result in better photos? Well, in this case does, the end result is better more often than not. The Pixel 9 Pro XL prefers more contrasty shots, which are visibly processed, but in a good way. It’s more reliable than the Galaxy S24, and it does a better job with HDR. The Pixel 9 Pro XL also has an advantage when it comes to high-zoom photos thanks to its periscope telephoto snapper.

Audio

Both of these smartphones offer stereo speakers. They also offer very similar loudness, and not that different sound profile. The sound output from both sets of speakers is really good, not the best we’ve heard, but good.

You will not get an audio jack on either of the two smartphones. Each of them does offer a Type-C port, however, so you can use that to connect your wired headphones. Alternatively, both phones support Bluetooth 5.3.
