It seems like the Samsung Galaxy S20 series will not offer 120Hz refresh rate at QHD+ resolution after all. This information comes from Ice Universe, a tipster you’ve probably heard of thus far.
This is not the first time he’s reporting on this. Quite recently, he claimed that the option will not be available. Soon after that, he changed his mind, and said it will be. Third time’s the charm, though, right?
The Galaxy S20 series won’t offer 120Hz at QHD+ resolution after all
The latest information from the tipster claims that Samsung decided against 120Hz at QHD+ resolution. In his tweet, the tipster said that he can say that „with certainty” now. Considering Ice Universe is usually spot on, especially when using such phrasing, who are we not to believe him.
The source reports that you’ll be able to take advantage of that 120Hz display at fullHD+ resolution, but not QHD+. Both 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates will be available at fullHD+ resolution, and only 60Hz at QHD+.
This means that you won’t be able to take advantage of the highest possible resolution and highest possible refresh rate at the same time. That’s really a shame.
Android modders will probably unlock this option soon after the Galaxy S20 gets released, though, of course. There is a reason why Samsung decided to go down this road, though.
High refresh rates are battery drainers, especially such a high refresh rate as 120Hz. Now, that, in combination with a QHD+ display, probably proved to be too much for Samsung to handle in terms of optimization.
It’s not easy to optimize battery consumption in general, especially when both high refresh rates and high resolutions are concerned. The vast majority of people won’t have any issues with this decision, techie people, on the other hand… well, that’s a different story.
What’s interesting is the fact that Ice Universe used the term 'Galaxy S20 series’. He did not mention the Galaxy S20 Ultra in specific, like last time. That means that all three Galaxy S20 units are expected to offer 120Hz display. All three will be limited to 120Hz at fullHD+, it seems.

Samsung’s flagships are arriving on February 11
The Galaxy S20 series will be announced on February 11 in San Francisco. Samsung already scheduled a press conference, and chances are that the Galaxy Z Flip foldable will also be announced at that event.
Samsung is planning to announce the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra handsets as part of this series. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ will be available in both 4G and 5G flavors, allegedly. The Galaxy S20 Ultra, on the other hand, will ship in a 5G flavor only.
