Motorola’s two-year old Moto Z2 Force now works on 5G thanks to a moto mod the company released. Called simply the 5G moto mod, users can snap it to the back of their phone and enable a 5G connection. This is also just the latest phone the mod now works with, since it launched with the Moto Z3 in 2018.
Releasing it for the Moto Z3 likely makes sense, as it’s a newer phone that came out last year. Bringing 5G to a two-year old phone, however, could make less sense to some consumers. Two years is right around the time that many decide to upgrade. That being said, those who didn’t buy the Z2 Force right at launch may have just purchased it very recently. For those consumers the addition of 5G is probably very welcome.
To be clear, this is the same 5G moto mod as before. The difference is that Motorola has opened up its compatibility to expand it to the Moto Z2 Force. The thing to keep in mind is that the 5G moto mod costs $350 through Verizon. This means if you have an upgrade available, it could be cheaper to just upgrade to a 5G-capable phone. Whether or not that’s the right move depends on your personal needs.
It’s also worth remembering that this is a solid improvement on the Z2 Force even if the phone is old. Some consumers will have no doubt decided to keep this phone for as long as they can. If that happens to be for more than a year or two from now, then augmenting the phone to work with Verizon’s 5G network could be a big deal.
A big reason for that is because the 5G moto mod has received other updates that improve it in additional ways. Alongside the compatibility with the Moto Z2 Force, Motorola has also set it up to reach faster download speeds. The company claims that speed update will help users download high-definition videos and games in just „seconds,” which is bold claim.
That doesn’t mean everyone who owns this mod will get those speeds. Verizon’s 5G has not been rolled out everywhere yet. It’s currently only available in a handful of cities across the US, but the carrier plans to have it rolled out to at least 30 by the end of 2019. As for where it is available, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Providence, Detroit, Atlanta, Indianapolis, St. Paul, and Washington D.C. have access.
Another improvement comes in the form of the battery. Motorola has put out an update that allows the mod to charge the phone when its battery gets low. In turn, the phone can charge the mod when its battery gets low too. It’s a harmonious relationship and sharing of power. One that promises to keep people connected to a fast network while also ensuring their phone or mod doesn’t die on them.
The 5G moto mod works with the Moto Z4 as well. If you’re more concerned with having a newer phone to use on Verizon’s 5G network, this could be the solution.
