We all love faster WiFi, and Qualcomm has just announced two new WiFi chipsets that are going to be faster than ever. These are new WiFi 6E chips from Qualcomm. With one designed for phones and another designed for routers.
There are two Qualcomm chips being announced today, the FastConnect 6700 and FastConnect 6900. Which have theoretical speeds of 3Gbps and 3.6Gbps, respectively. Both of these support the maximum size of WiFi channels, which is 160MHz on 5GHz and 6GHz.
Qualcomm’s VP of technology, VK Jones said that his „personal expectation is this is going to be a very fast transition” to 6GHz WiFi.
We’ll most likely have to wait for new Snapdragon chipsets to take advantage of WiFi 6. Seeing as the Snapdragon 865 has already been available for many months and powers all of the flagships released in 2020. It is very likely that the FastConnect 6900 is going to be available with the Snapdragon 875, which will be unveiled in December.
Qualcomm also mentioned that smartphone makers could choose whether they want to use one of these new WiFi chips or not. Instead of being forced to use 6GHz WiFi, like Qualcomm did with 5G on the Snapdragon 865 – a big reason why all flagships are more expensive this year.
What is 6GHz WiFi?
6GHz WiFi is faster WiFi, compared to 5GHz. As you might be able to tell by the frequency. It uses the newly opened up spectrum for WiFi, which is going to offer much faster speeds. It does have the same theoretical top speed as 5GHz WiFi, at 9.6Gbps. But it offers more space for WiFi signals to go through, which means that you’re going to have less interruptions in your WiFi network.
Unlike 2.4GHz WiFi, 6GHz does not travel as far. As it is further up on the spectrum, it provides more speed and less coverage, so don’t expect 2.4GHz WiFi to go away anytime soon.
There are some routers available now that support WiFi 6, and also some smartphones – like the iPhone. But for the most part, WiFi 6 is not really in use right now. That is going to change in the coming year though. Especially with Qualcomm releasing its new WiFi 6E chipsets today. The smartphone chipset will be available in the second half of the year, but the chipset made for routers is going to be available starting today. So we may see a lot more WiFi 6 routers coming in the very near future.
