Google is planning to kill off Custom Emoji „Minis” in what appears to be an unexplained move. XDA has broken this news shortly after it found Google was also planning to axe Google Chrome’s bottom tab „Duet”. It seems that soon the keyboard app will no longer have the „Minis” feature according to a string of code found by XDA.
This type of APK teardown and predict when features are going to arrive on an app but also when they are going to be taken away. As part of Gboard’s 9.5.3 update, it is suggested that this feature will leave the keyboard app. The update introduced next word prediction and spelling correction as well.
Google Axes Custom Emoji „Minis”
Minis is a feature that has been available on Gboard for around two years now. It allows you to create personalized stickers using machine learning algorithms. Initially, it was designed to allow users to create two sticker packs with their selfies. However, a third option was introduced allowing users to create an emoji version of their face.
There is no clarity available on when Google plans to make this removal of custom emoji „minis”. Given that Google has already added this string of data to the app the change cannot be far away. Perhaps in the next stable Gboard update.
Another important point that is currently unclear is what will happen to existing custom stickers. No one knows whether they will remain in place or whether they will be removed along with the feature itself.
The announcement of custom emojis back in 2018 came with a lot of fanfare and excitement. The process of making one of these custom emojis was quick and easy to do and therefore proved popular with users. All that was needed was to take a selfie, run it through the algorithms then fine-tune the emoji. It is likely to be quite an unpopular move to get rid of the feature.
Google often makes regular changes to their apps on Android, providing optimisations, new features and updates. However, it is not stranger to removing features as well. This is another example of this and once again Google appears to have done so with little explanation to users. The lack of explanation and communication is likely to be what angers users if there is any backlash on this move. However, with new updates coming thick and fast, perhaps this one will be allowed to let slide.
