The NBA is planning to use Oura rings to catch Covid-19 symptoms in its restart plans for the sport as reported by The Athletic. Researchers have claimed that the technology can be used to predict Covid-19 symptoms before they present themselves.
Players will use Oura’s smart rings which in theory can predict Covid-19 symptoms three days in advance. In addition to this players will wear bracelets that will beep if they have been within six feet of someone else for too long.
NBA Using Technology to Restart
Fitbit has also announced a study that aims to do predict symptoms of Covid-19 in order to reduce spread. Apparently wearing the Oura rings will be optional for NBA players. Additionally, the data collected will be anonymous. This means it will only available to team doctors if a player has an „illness probability score”.
This will then trigger a medical review on the player in question. Other technology being used to track symptoms is rumoured to be being looked at. However, as of yet, nothing else is known. It is also worth noting that the players union is not fully on board with plans for a restart. Meaning that none of these plans are set in stone, however, it does look like the NBA is moving towards a restart at some pace.
How Oura Rings Work
Oura rings are made from titanium and are water-resistant, weighing about four to six grams. They have about seven days worth of charge in a single-use so are very convenient to use in this instance. They also charge up quickly in just 80 minutes.
In general, the rings are very similar to most fitness trackers. They have three body temperature sensors, infrared LED sensors as well as an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The key benefit behind the rings is that they can be worn 24/7.
This means in the case of tracking and predicting Covid-19 symptoms they build up a fuller picture. Compared to other wearables that are only worn the day Oura rings and collect much more data and hopefully create a more robust prediction of symptoms.
The study which demonstrated their efficacy found that the ring could predict symptoms with 90% accuracy three days in advance of their display. It is worth noting that researchers recommend it is used with other AI technology in order to build up a fuller picture.
We are likely to see more coming out about other technologies being used for NBA players. However, as of now, this is not a widespread solution to Covid-19. This is because it needs much more work to work in the real world.
