Zoom has announced a number of new security features in order to curb a number of issues the app as faced. As reported by Android Central, these new features should stop so-called 'Zoombombers’. This comes as the company aims to stop disruptive behavior.
Since its surge in popularity due to the pandemic, Zoom has faced a number of security issues. As a result, the company has long since committed to improving security measures.
This is not the only innovation the company has made. This week, Zoom announced that it would scrap the 40-minute time limit for free users over the thanksgiving period.
Zoom will hope that these new security features that allow users to report any disruptive participants will curb disruptive behavior. However, researches have noted that 'Zoombombing’ remains to be a serious issue for the company.
Zoom outlines new security features
Zoom’s new features allow hosts and co-hosts to temporarily pause their meeting and get rid of a disruptive participant. This allows users to remove 'Zoombombers’ from your meetings by clicking on the  „Suspend Participant Activities” option under the security icon.
This is a new option for users and will quickly allow users to get rid of any problem participants in their meetings. While using this option all meeting activity will pause. This includes in-meeting chat, annotation, screen sharing, and recording.
Hosts and co-hosts can also share details and include a screenshot while reporting a user. This provides evidence for the removal.
Those hosting the meeting can also report a disruptive user from the Zoom client. This option can be found clicking the top-left Security badge when you’re in a meeting.
However, this feature will only work if you have already enabled reporting capabilities for non-hosts in web settings. These features are now available for desktop clients for Mac, PC, Linux, and mobile apps. There are also plans to expand this capability to the Zoom web client and VDI later this year.
Overall, this gives more host agency to control the behavior of those in a meeting. Easier and more accessible reporting feature will certainly have an impact on so-called 'Zoombombers’.
The question is just how effective will these features be. Although it is good to see users given more security features this is unlikely to totally fix all the issues Zoom face. We may find that the company needs to make more additions to combat security problems in the near future.
