OnePlus 9 OTA Update Brings Hasselblad’s ‘XPan Mode’ to the Stock Camera App

The multi-year partnership between OnePlus and Hasselblad is off to a great start, thanks to a new camera update for the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro. This OTA update for the camera introduces XPan Mode, which replicates the experience of Hasselblad’s iconic XPan cameras. The update is rolling out starting today, i.e., September 17, 2021.
The update also brings stability improvements and other minor fixes. In terms of changes, XPan Mode offers an aspect ratio of 65:21. Users will also find dedicated wide capture modes with the ability to choose between 30mm and 45mm focal lengths.
To bring a realistic feel to the camera experience, the image preview section shows frame lines similar to an XPan camera. Moreover, users can see a “special animation of developing negative film” when an image is captured.
The update will also speed up the opening of the native camera app by 50%
OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro users will also find two film simulation effects – Color or black and white. OnePlus said that it worked closely with Hasselblad to replicate the black and white simulation effect.

The update also cuts down lag in photo previews while also improving dynamic range in low-light conditions. Separately, the camera app now has a better success rate while capturing moving objects. The company further said that the launch time of the native camera app is now 50% faster.
Users have previously complained of the auto-modes overcompensating in some scenarios. OnePlus has reportedly fixed this bug as well. Lastly, the update brings the September 2021 security patch.
The Hasselblad-branded cameras on the OnePlus 9 didn’t quite live up to the hype. But this new update could breathe a new life to the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. Be sure to check out our OnePlus 9 camera samples from earlier this year.
OnePlus has received plenty of feedback on its new camera system over the last few months. “By the end of August, we had gathered more than 4,000 pieces of valuable feedback and suggestions on the camera system alone,” the company said in its announcement.
The manufacturer also acknowledged its limitations with first-generation hardware saying, “there are lots of areas where we can improve OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro’s camera system.”
