The PS5 recently received its big Fall software update that introduced expandable storage, and Samsung this week confirmed that its 980 Pro NVMe SSD is compatible with the console.
There’s a fairly short list of requirements for the SSD to work if you want to use it inside of your PS5, and the Samsung 980 Pro meets most of those requirements. First, it needs to be a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD. PCIe Gen 3 SSDs will not work. Luckily the 980 Pro is PCIe Gen4.
Another factor is that the SSD needs to have a read speed of at least 5,500MB/s. The 980 Pro meets that requirement as well. Since like most of the compatible SSDs, it has a read speed of up to 7,000MB/s. There are of course a couple of things about the Samsung 980 Pro that users need to be aware of before settling on this SSD.
The Samsung 980 Pro doesn’t have a heatsink, which is recommended for the PS5
The reason SSD models like the WD_Black SN850 from Western Digital and the FireCuda 530 from Seagate have been so popular for the PS5 expandable storage is twofold. For one, both of those SSDs come with options to buy them with a built-in heatsink. Which makes them a little easier to work with for PS5 installation. As you don’t have to install a heatsink on the SSD yourself.
PlayStation’s Mark Cerny also recommended the WD_Black SN850. So this potentially gave it a little bit of a leg up. The Samsung 980 pro, unfortunately doesn’t come with its own heatsink built-in. That doesn’t make it unusable, it just means you have to buy a heatsink separately and install it on the SSD before installing the SSD into your PS5.
Another thing to be aware of is that the 980 Pro only goes up to 2TB. Both the WD_Black SN850 and the FireCuda 530 come in up to 4TB. Which would almost certainly ensure you would never run out of storage for games. While an additional 2TB is a lot, 4TB is a lot more. And if you like to have all of your games installed all the time, 4TB go a long way to make that possible.
Samsung plans to release a model with a built-in heatsink later this year
The currently available 980 Pro may not have a heatsink built-in, but it will eventually. Samsung has confirmed that later this year, it plans to release a 980 Pro SSD with a built-in heatsink.
There is no confirmed date yet, but we’ve reached out for comment and we’ll update this story with those details when and if we hear back. The important thing here is that Samsung is going to be releasing a model of the 980 Pro with a heatsink.
So if you prefer Samsung SSDs and want the 980 Pro for your PS5, but also don’t want to install your own heatsink, it might be worth waiting for Samsung to officially launch the new model before getting one.
