Sonos Speakers Finally Get Support For Spotify Free

Sonos has finally added Spotify Free streaming support to its speaker lineup. A newly released software update adds this ability to Sonos speakers. Until now, Sonos speaker owners required a paid account to be able to stream music from Spotify.
You can listen to Spotify Free on your Sonos speaker directly from Spotify by using Spotify Connect, or through the Sonos app. To do that, you will first need to update the Sonos app to the latest version. Once you have updated the app, navigate to the Settings menu and then Services. Now select Add a Service under Music & Content and then proceed to Set-up or Log-in.
Spotify Free on Sonos gives you access to the entire catalog available on the music streaming service. In addition, you get access to 15 on-demand personalized as well as curated playlists, including the likes of Discover Weekly, Release Radar, Daily Mix, and RapCaviar. If your Sonos speaker has Google Assistant, you can voice-control your Spotify Free playlists. Alexa, which is also available in a number of Sonos devices, does not yet work with Spotify Free.
„Spotify Free users will now be able to stream directly to their Symfonisk speakers using the Sonos app or Spotify connect, bringing affordable listening to the many people,” The Verge quotes Johanna Nordell, Business Developer for Ikea’s Home Smart division, as saying. Ikea partnered up with Sonos earlier this year to develop and sell the budget Symfonisk speaker range. Symfonisk speakers start at $99.
Spotify eyeing to grab more customers this holiday season
Spotify has 248 million monthly users, and more than half of them are on Spotify Free plan, the company detailed in its Q3 2019 earnings report. That number might grow further now with Sonos speakers being able to stream music through a free Spotify account. This addition will also make Sonos speakers more appealing to prospective buyers. With the holiday season just around the corner, this creates a win-win situation for the two companies.
Last month, Spotify announced a promotional campaign that offered a free Google Home Mini to all Spotify Premium subscribers. Spotify’s other recent efforts to beef up its user base include the partnership with AT&T in the US. Subscribers of AT&T’s Unlimited & More Premium plan get Spotify Premium at no extra cost.
For other users, Spotify Premium costs $10 per month, while Spotify Premium Family costs $15 per month. You get ad-supported Hulu free with a Spotify Premium subscription, though. The service usually costs $6 per month.
