OnePlus has partnered with Google to bring Google Assistant’s Ambient Mode to its phones. The proactive Google Assistant experience is now rolling out to all compatible OnePlus devices, the company announced today. The list includes the OnePlus 3 from 2016 and newer devices.
If you own a compatible OnePlus phone, you can enable Ambient Mode by clicking on the notification that pops up when you plug your phone’s charger.
You can also manually turn it on by going to Google app > More > Settings > Google Assistant > Assistant tab > Devices (phone). Once you’ve opt-in, the feature automatically starts every time you plug in a charger.
Take note that this is a staged rollout and may not be available on all compatible devices immediately.
A OnePlus staff member said it may take up to a week for all OnePlus users to get access to the feature. Don’t forget to look out for that notification when you plug in your phone’s charger next time.
Google Assistant Ambient Mode on OnePlus
Google announced the Ambient Mode at IFA 2019 in September. The feature is designed to make your Android phones and tablets more productive when they are charging. It basically turns your device into a smart display, like the Google Nest Hub or the Amazon Echo Show.
The Google Assistant Ambient Mode takes over the phone’s screen while it is charging. It will display proactive suggestions and information from your calendar, weather, reminders, and more. You also get music controls and smart home controls on your lock screen.
A single tap on the widgets will give you full-screen controls. This makes it easy to accomplish tasks. You don’t even have to unlock your phone and fire up apps.
You can also choose to turn your smartphone into a digital photo frame with the Ambient Mode feature. It will display a slideshow from Google Photos.
Ambient Mode requires at least Android Oreo. However, despite many devices meeting the compatibility criteria, the rollout has been rather slow.
The feature made its debut on a couple of Lenovo tablets, Smart Tab M8 HD and Yoga Smart Tab, and two Nokia phones, Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2. It was rolled out to a few more Android phones in November last year. OnePlus phones now join them.
Availability has been previously confirmed for Sony, Xiaomi, and Transsion devices as well. We’ll have to wait and see how long it takes for Google to make the Google Assistant Ambient Mode available for all compatible Android devices.
