Xiaomi is now apologizing over delayed Android updates for some of its devices, due to the Coronavirus outbreak in China.
Sumit Sonal, who is the head of Xiaomi India, indicated on Twitter that at least one of its major updates has been slowed down considerably due to the outbreak.
The Xiaomi Mi A3 was supposed to get Android 10 earlier this month, but missed that date, likely due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
China’s extended shutdown slowed down these updates
Sonal did explain that due to the Chinese government’s choice to extend the shutdown after the Chinese New Year to try and contain the outbreak, has slowed down Xiaomi’s ability to get updates out on time.
For the majority of Xiaomi’s offices, which are in China, they were shut down due to the outbreak and this was done to help keep employees healthy and avoid any that might be affected.
Obviously, those that bought the Mi A3 are somewhat disappointed by how long it’s taking their Android One smartphone to get the latest Android update. That’s one of the key selling points for Android One smartphones. But Sonal has explained on Twitter that Xiaomi considers its employees as „top priority” and that these updates are secondary right now.
It’s unfortunate, but given how deadly the Coronavirus has become, this is definitely the right stance to take for Xiaomi.
In regards to the Mi A3 though, the Android 10 update is apparently working toward „final certification”, so it shouldn’t be much longer.
Coronavirus is affecting more than just hardware
We’ve seen a number of product launches get delayed because of the Coronavirus. Because companies haven’t been able to get the product that they are announcing, into mass production.
Now, we’re seeing the same affects on software updates. Though, this should really only affect Chinese smartphone companies like Xiaomi, OPPO, and OnePlus. Samsung likely won’t be affected, since their updates are done in South Korea. Though South Korea is rapidly growing in the number Coronavirus cases it is seeing. So that could become an issue very soon.
Coronavirus is still wrecking havoc in the tech world, and this isn’t going to change anytime soon. In fact, the CDC has said that it’s not a matter of if there is an outbreak in the US, but when. As it has been very hard to contain the disease, especially since it is able to be transmitted so easily.
