Google Stadia will be adding support for multiple OnePlus phones soon, including the OnePlus 8 series devices that were just announced this morning.
This makes for Stadia’s 28th and 29th phones when it comes to compatible devices that you can actually play games on. Which will push above 30 when OnePlus officially announces which of its other devices will get the same support.
The company didn’t mention which of its older devices would be included, just that some of its past phones would be compatible in the future. But one could assume the OnePlus 7 series would be among them as these are the most recent devices prior to the OnePlus 8 series.
It’s also likely that the OnePlus 6 series will end up getting support for Stadia as well. Especially if phones as old as the Pixel 2 and Galaxy S8 series work with the service.
Stadia should be live on the OnePlus 8 series at launch
OnePlus went so far as to mention that its OnePlus 8 series phones would support Google Stadia. It didn’t really elaborate on it beyond that though.
The service might be live on the phones when they go up for sale a little bit later this year. However OnePlus didn’t confirm this. And assuming that would be there is just that, an assumption. At least for now.
It also wouldn’t be a major shock if the support wasn’t there right at the beginning. Google has been rolling out support for Stadia to new devices rather slowly since its launch in November of 2019. And it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to see it take a little longer here too.
You don’t need the top spec OnePlus 8 Pro
Thanks to the way Stadia works, you won’t need a device with the tops specs to play games like DOOM Eternal. This means the OnePlus 8 Pro with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage should perform just as well.
While only you as a consumer can decide what your needs are for your next device, the base version of the new phone from OnePlus is more than capable of handling Stadia requirements. And it retails for $699 which is a lot less than $999.
For Google and OnePlus both, this announcement is good timing. As Google just announced that Stadia Pro is free for everyone for the next two months. The OnePlus 8 series should be out well before then. So if you’re planning to pick one up, you may as well sign up for Stadia if you haven’t already done so.
