Samsung says it achieved the industry’s fastest 5G speeds of 8.5Gbps with a pair of smartphones under lab conditions. The company conducted the test on the 800MHz of mmWave (millimeter wave) spectrum. It used carrier aggregation and MU-MIMO (multi-user multiple-input multiple-output) to achieve this record.
Samsung used two smartphones equipped with its latest 5G modem chipset for the test. This setup could deliver approximately 4.3Gbps speeds on each test device, reaching an industry record speed of 8.5Gbps across both devices.
Samsung employed its latest 5G NR Access Unit (AU) for the test. It is the industry’s first integrated radio for the mmWave spectrum. It combines a baseband, radio, and over 1,000 antenna elements into a single product. The AU was launched at Mobile World Congress Los Angeles in October 2019.
Samsung gearing up to make mmWave 5G available in South Korea
South Korea was the first to flick the switch on low-band commercial 5G last year. The country recently passed five million 5G subscribers. Samsung, who has been heavily involved in the deployment of the next-generation mobile networks in South Korea, is now gearing up to make mmWave 5G available in its home country.
„Samsung will continue to be at the forefront in advancing 5G mmWave technology,” said Hyunho Park, Senior Vice President, Samsung. „This successful demonstration proves mmWave’s potential to deliver new kinds of business use cases and open up opportunities for mobile operators. We look forward to building on this significant technical breakthrough to fuel our continuous journey towards an innovative and vibrant mmWave ecosystem”
Although the mmWave spectrum has its own disadvantages, the wide bandwidth from it opens up new opportunities for mobile operators. With multi-gigabit speeds that lower band spectrums are unable to match, this technology has the potential to bring transformation to areas across live streaming, remote learning, and teleconferencing, as well as several other use cases that are yet to be imagined.
Along with its home country South Korea, Samsung is helping with the commercial deployment of 5G in Japan as well. The Korean company is also actively supporting 5G commercial services in the US. Earlier this year, it teamed up with Verizon for a trial of the latter’s commercial network cell site. The carrier has commercially deployed the Samsung 5G NR Access Unit.
Samsung is also continuing the expansion of its 5G business in other markets, such as Canada and New Zealand. The company expects more than 15 nations to join the „5G mmWave club” in the coming years.
