Google is starting to roll out a new feature for YouTube TV that will give you quick access to channels on Android TV devices.
The change is actually rolling out to Android TV, and not for the YouTube TV app itself. There’s an update to the Android Web Services on Android TV that brings this feature in. But it allows you to jump to different channels from the home screen. Instead of needing to open the YouTube TV app first.
This is going to make it a lot easier for playing different channels, like ESPN once sports comes back. etc.
This is the update that Android TV users needed
This is a very important feature for YouTube TV users that are using Android TV. Being able to jump straight into a channel is going to be clutch for power users.
Now, it’s unclear whether this is going to be customizable or not. But that is something that will likely come down the road.
As well as a way to show your most watched TV shows, movies, and etc. Similar to what this feature does with Netflix, YouTube and other streaming services on Android TV.
It’s not a system update, and is being rolled out slowly
The roll out for this update is taking its time, as it normally does. But this was not a system update. Which is a good thing, as Android TV users will get this faster.
If it were a system update, it could be weeks or months before everyone got the update. As some Android TV partners are much slower at updating than others. Particularly those like Hisense and Sony that make Android TV-based TVs. So this is definitely good news.
Though you can still head into the Google Play Store and check for the update to the Android Web Settings and see if it is available for your device yet. If not, you’ll have to wait for it to become available for your Android TV device.
It is pretty interesting that this is an update to the Android Web Settings and not for YouTube TV. But hopefully the YouTube TV team will be able to build on this and add in some other features to make this row even more useful for YouTube TV users. Especially with YouTube TV gaining steam and adding more subscribers in the past year or so. Even with the price going up to $50.
