Google launched the Live Captions feature on the Pixel 4 last Fall for videos and now it seems to be coming to voice calls.
A new string of code found by XDA Developers within the app that handles the Live Captions feature points to Google adding it calls. One particular part of that string asks if the user would like to add Live Captions to the call.
Not only does this suggest that phone calls will have Live Captions in the future, but users will have the option to toggle it on or off. Specifically on a case by case basis.
Enabling Live Captions on voice calls will alert the other user
In addition to asking the user if they’d like to enable the Live Captions feature on voice calls it also notes that other users will be alerted.
Similar to how you might hear that a call is being recorded when you call certain places like your bank. The Live Captions being turned on is information that will be conveyed to the person on the other end of the call.
That’s something to keep in mind when and if Google ever enables it. As for the alerts, both people will hear an audio clip played that relays the message notifying both parties that Live Captions are being enabled.
This alert over the phone is likely for security purposes. So the other person knows that what they say over the phone is being transcribed.
Live captions are still on the way for Chrome
Live Captions isn’t just available for the Pixel 4. The feature was added for the Pixel 3a, the Pixel 3, and the Pixel 2, as well as the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 8, and the Samsung Galaxy S20.
But it’s also still on the way for Chrome browsers. Which means that soon uses will be able to watch videos on YouTube on the desktop or laptop and have the audio transcribed on the screen.
Videos on YouTube already have captions, though not all of them include it. And even the ones that do don’t always display the words properly. So the Live Captions in Chrome should work a lot better.
Live Captions for Chrome was discovered back in February. There is still no time frame though on when the feature will be released. For now, users that are wanting to get a hold of it will just have to keep an eye out for it.
