With people worldwide confined to their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic, video calling has become vital for personal interactions. LINE is the latest company to bring in a more sophisticated video calling service called LINE Meeting.
LINE works more like the „super app” WeChat than just a regular instant messaging app like WhatsApp. It is the top IM app in several Asian countries, but still the least known in the West.
LINE Meeting offers group video calling with up to 500 users
Group video calling is nothing new for LINE users. However, it was only limited to LINE chat groups until now. With LINE Meeting, the app now supports making group video calls by sharing a URL. It’s not only free, but works with non-LINE users as well.
The participants can simply join the group video call by clicking on the link. There will also be an option to join group calls with or without video. Now, LINE users can also add new participants even when the meeting is in progress.
LINE Meeting is now available on its smartphone app with version 10.13.0 or later and on the PC with version 6.2.0 or later. The LINE users can create meetings with up to 500 users. In order to make these group video calls secure, LINE will generate complex URLs with 32 characters.
Also, participants can only join a group video call by clicking on the shared URL. There is also a „Kick Out” feature for removing specific users from a group call. The newly announced LINE Meeting also comes with a Watch Together feature.
Includes several background effects and filters
This new feature allows users to share their screens or a YouTube video during group video calls. Moreover, users can add effects and filters to make video calls look cool. While the smartphone app includes 106 effects and 41 filters, the PC version is limited to only 12 filters.
Apart from selecting one of the default background effects, the user can also set their own images as a background to give it a more personal touch. Over the last few months, we have seen improvements in the video calling service from many other apps.
With Duo, Google now offers up to 32 participants for a single group video call. While initially limited to just 8 users, the company increased the limit to 12 in March of this year. There is also a new service called Google Meet to cater to enterprises and other business organizations.
