Huawei now became the second-largest smartphone brand in the world. The company achieved this feat even though it was caught in the tussle between the US and China. However, Huawei is also making significant developments in the automotive industry by developing lidar products.
According to KrASIA, Huawei is currently working on low-cost lidar-based products for autonomous vehicles. Apart from making the products cost-effective, the company is aiming to improve the performance. In June last year, the company also announced to spend over £12.5 billion over the next five years on self-driving and electric cars.
Huawei aims to launch lidar products under $100
During the 12th Automotive Blue Book Forum opening in Wuhan, Wang Jun, head of the smart auto division at Huawei, said the company is planning to launch lidar products under $100 in the future. Currently, the lidar products available in the market cost around $500 on average.
Huawei will be using its expertise in the telecommunications sector to offer better auto products for the car manufacturers. Obviously, there is no elaborate explanation of how this works. Many companies are now opting for lidar sensors in their autonomous cars.
The lidar sensor fires beams of laser light to measure the range between the source and object. According to Wang Jun, the advancements in 5G technology will help in bringing the cost of the sensors down. Huawei already had an R&D center in Wuhan with more than 10,000 employees.
It already offers autonomous driving solutions to car manufacturers
The company will soon launch the 100-channel and 200-channel lidar products at a lower price than the competition. However, it is not planning to launch its own autonomous car. Huawei is also developing innovative solutions to develop and produce cars much faster.
Huawei also developed the Level 4 full-stack intelligent driving solution in September last year. The Level 4 solution is just one step away from Level 5 which brings in full automation. The company will offer these autonomous driving solutions for car manufacturers.
It also announced partnerships with several companies including Audi, BYD, and GAC Group. With the lidar sensors, this will be the first time Huawei coming up with a hardware product in the auto industry. With the US sanctions, the company lacks the access to technology and other facilities from the US-based companies.
The flagship Huawei smartphones with NFC support can also work as a key to lock/unlock the cars. This works the same way as Apple’s Car Key feature announced earlier this year.
