The PS5 release is fast approaching and a question on many people’s minds is whether or not their favorite PS4 games will get a free upgrade to the new console.
A fair amount of recently released games, or games that will be releasing very soon, will get free upgrades if you chose (or plan to choose) the PS4 version. The PS5 will be backwards compatible with most games from the PS4 system.
So what you bought there can be downloaded to the PS5 and you can still play them. This isn’t the case for every game, and some studios are even releasing PS5 versions of games.
And naturally if you’ve already bought the PS4 version you probably don’t want to buy the same game again at all, let alone at full retail price. Luckily for the games we have listed here, you won’t need to re-purchase.
Because the publishers behind them will be allowing a free upgrade to the PS5 if you’ve bought the PS4 version of the game. Meaning you’ll get the newly enhanced version with better graphics meant to take advantage of the new system’s more powerful hardware.

Many games won’t get an upgrade but they’ll still be free
While it is nice that some games are getting an upgraded PS5 version and it won’t cost you a penny, not all games will be getting the same treatment.
Since most games are going to be supported by the backwards compatibility though, you will basically get them for free to use on your PS5.
It is worth noting though that save data isn’t transferrable to the PS5. So if you have a game you’ve already started playing on the PS4, you may just want to finish it on that console if you’re a good ways into it.
If you’re like some of us and you have a giant backlog of games you’ve yet to touch but definitely intend to get to, then by all means transfer the game and enjoy it on the main console you’re likely to be spending most of your time on going forward.
Older generation games won’t be backwards compatible
When it comes to backwards compatibility, the PS5 is only supporting games for the PS4. And even then it isn’t supporting every single game. Most games, but not all.
As for the PS3, PS2, and PS1, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has confirmed that the PS5 won’t play discs from those older consoles. Which means you’ll have to keep them if you want to play the older games you have for each console.
There is probably one exception to this rule. There are a number of older games from those consoles that were released for the PS4 as PSN games. They’re digital. So if you bought them as digital versions on the PS4 through PSN, it’s likely you’ll be able to play them on the PS5.
That being said Ryan hasn’t exactly mentioned this in particular. There is always a small chance that any of your digital PSN games from PS4 won’t work on PS5. It is probably a very small chance, though.
You’ll get more free games through the PS Plus Collection
Aside from all the PS4 games that are getting a PS5 upgrade, there are more free games you’ll be able to acquire. Sony announced the PS Plus Collection the day it announced the price of the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition.
Some of the best PS4 games are included in this collection. And it’s available to all PS5 buyers at no charge. Presumably you’ll need a PS Plus subscription, but you won’t have to buy the games.
The best part is that it includes mega hit titles like God Of War, Final Fantasy XV, Bloodborne, Persona 5, and more. All of these games will be downloadable on launch day.
