The Stadia Controller No Longer Supports Only 3.5mm Headsets

The Stadia controller now supports more than just 3.5mm headsets. Showing that Google is slowly but surely rolling out more features for the platform to make it more robust.
Before you get too excited, this isn’t referring to Bluetooth headsets. Those still don’t have support with the controller. Though support like that could still be coming at some point in the future.
That being said, any more support than just one type of headset (3.5mm headsets or earbuds) is a good thing. Because it opens things up for players and makes it more possible for people to enjoy personal audio when playing games.
The Stadia controller now supports USB-C headsets and earbuds
While it isn’t Bluetooth, USB-C support is still a good thing. It gives the player more options in how to hook up a more personal audio experience with their gameplay.
There are a number of decent USB-C headsets out there. Like the SteelSeries Arctis 1 for example which uses a wireless transmitter that plugs into the USB-C port to keep things cord-free. This might even be the best example possible.
Because you don’t have to use a wired headset, and it’s a proper gaming headset that comes with a mic, which will work perfectly for voice chat. Keeping this in mind, even though Bluetooth isn’t supported players now actually have a wireless option. You could also plug in a pair of USB-C headphones or earbuds. And these are likely less expensive. So you can save money too.
USB-C headsets are only supported on CCU and Chrome
If there’s one downside to this entire revelation, it’s that this only seems to work when playing games through Chrome or on the Chromecast Ultra.
If you play primarily using the phone, then you’re probably out of luck here with USB-C headsets connecting to the controller for now. The good thing is that you can still hook up a Bluetooth headset to your phone. So you still get wireless audio with Stadia in a roundabout way even if it’s not with the controller.
One thing worth mentioning too, is that the SteelSeries Arctis 1 works with mobile devices. So if you do have a phone that uses USB-C, and most phones use this type of plug now, then you can still continue playing games with wireless audio headsets.
In the end, Google is beginning to expand headset support for its own controller. And that’s a step in the right direction for the platform.
