The recent updates added some nifty features to the Gboard app on Android. According to AndroidPolice, the server-side update rolling out to a limited number of Gboard users will allow an extra emoji to show up in the suggestion strip.
Prior to this update, the suggestion strip uses to display (mostly) two words and one emoji. Since emojis don’t fill up much space, there used to be a lot of empty screen real estate around that single emoji. With the latest update, Google is accommodating two emojis instead of one in the same space.
Gboard app now displays an extra emoji suggestion
If there are no multiple emoji suggestions related to the keyword, there will only be a single emoji on display. With hundreds of new emojis coming up every year, that won’t be the case for many words. Since this is a server-side update, there is no guarantee that the new changes will be visible in the latest version of the app.
Still, you can try your luck by updating the Gboard app to version 9.9.06.333092878. If you are someone who have disabled the emoji suggestion, then this new update might not make any difference. For others, it will surely improve the emoji usage in their texts.
This new feature shows up via a server-side update
While the change is visible on the Android version, there is no mention of the iOS version of the app. The company also started rolling out the redesigned Gboard app for beta testers. This new UI of the keyboard app was first spotted through an APK teardown in the month of July.
The dark theme of the app now comes sports a black background with gray keys. Additionally, Google is also using a contrasting shade of gray for the shift, backspace, enter, and number/symbol keys. Another new feature of the Gboard app is the dictate to translate right in the keyboard.
While the preview of the dictation is shown in the native language, the translated text will appear in the text field. Once this feature is rolled out publically, there will be no need of copying the translated text from the translation app and pasting it in the text field.
At this point, however, there is no confirmation from Google about the public rollout of the new version of the Gboard for Android app. Currently, all these new features are under beta testing. It might take a few more weeks for these features to appear in the public version of the app.
