Fantasy Game Project Athia Is Console-Exclusive To PS5 For 2 Years

Sony grabs another highly anticipated title for its PS5 console as an exclusive game with Project Athia.
On December 7, the PlayStation YouTube channel published a brand-new trailer that highlighted new and upcoming games to keep an eye on. In that trailer there’s a short snippet of Project Athia footage, and in small text at the bottom it states that it will be exclusive to PS5 for at least 24 months.
Worth noting though is that this is only exclusive to PS5 in regards to consoles. The game is still planned for a PC release and is likely to hit at or around the same time as the PS5 launch. Though things could always change between now and the game’s arrival.
Project Athia may be exclusive to PS5 for more than 2 years
It can’t be ruled out that Project Athia may be an exclusive title for the PS5 for longer than a 2-year period. While PC owners should be able to enjoy it right away, those wanting to pick it up on the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S may have to wait quite a while.
The exclusivity of the game won’t start until the game is actually available. And from that point is when the 2-year clock starts. Project Athia is currently in development by Luminous Productions and is being published by Square Enix and there’s no telling how long development will take.
SE isn’t strictly a PlayStation publisher and its games can be found on numerous platforms. But it does seem to have a bit of a fondness for the PlayStation platform. Throughout the PS1 and PS2 life cycles, any of the Final Fantasy games were exclusive to those consoles. And it took years before there were ports for other platforms.
And with Sony stating that it would be at least 24 months before Project Athia goes to another console, there’s a strong possibility that 2 years could turn into 3 or more.
Sony continues to build a strong exclusive lineup
Neither the Xbox Series X nor the PS5 have a giant list of exclusive titles right now. But that will change for both platforms once each of them has been around a bit longer and more games come out.
For the PS5, Sony has started with a select few really excellent exclusive games. Like Demon’s Souls, or Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Both of which have been universally praised. Project Athia may not be as good as either of those games.
But from the looks of things right now, it’s a visually impressive game. Which will no doubt grab it some attention. And if it turns out to be really good, then Sony will have made a good decision to secure the timed console exclusive rights.
