OnePlus is rumored to launch three smartphones under the OnePlus 9 series. According to the latest leak from China, none of these new OnePlus 9 smartphones will feature a periscope lens setup for the telephoto camera. While there is no exact reason mentioned, the supply chain issues could have impacted the company in sourcing these sensors.
While OnePlus smartphones came a long way in terms of hardware and design, they have always lacked in the camera department. Without the periscope-style zoom lens, 2021 flagship smartphones from OnePlus will continue to miss out on long-range zoom capabilities. As seen on the OnePlus 8 Pro, the upcoming OnePlus 9 smartphone could have a 3x hybrid zoom limit.
OnePlus 9 smartphones to launch without a periscope zoom camera
On the other hand, OPPO has launched quite a few smartphones with the periscope-style zoom lens. However, the newly launched OPPO Reno5 Pro+ also came with a 13-megapixel regular telephoto camera. Going by the previous leaks, the top of the line OnePlus 9 Pro will launch with a quad-camera setup on the rear.
Whereas the OnePlus 9 will settle for a triple camera setup. From the leaked renders, both of these devices seem to sport large sensors for primary and ultra-wide cameras. The OnePlus 9 could come with a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera.
The fourth sensor on the OnePlus 8 Pro came with a color filter lens. However, the company disabled it out of the box as it can also see through thin layers of clothing. With the upcoming OnePlus 9 Pro, the company could replace the color filter with some other sensor to improve its imaging capabilities.
The telephoto cameras on these devices will have limited zoom capabilities
The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will come powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform. Alongside the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, the company also rumored to launch the OnePlus 9 Lite. It will be the first time for OnePlus to launch three smartphones under its flagship series.
The OnePlus 9 Lite will settle for the current-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. Not just the chipset, the leaks also suggest the Lite variant to share a lot of hardware similarities with the OnePlus 8T. OnePlus rumored to launch these new flagship smartphones earlier than usual.
The previous leaks suggest the OnePlus 9 series will make its debut in March 2021. However, there is no official confirmation from the company yet. Recently, OnePlus also confirmed to launch its first-ever smartwatch in early 2021.
