There is some good news for OneDrive users on Android. On February 2 Microsoft announced a new update for OneDrive on Android. The new update includes a revamped home screen experience. This should make it easier to navigate the application.
Microsoft says that personal OneDrive account users will now see three new main sections. These three new sections are accessed files, files downloaded for offline use, and „On This Day” photos. The „On This Day” sections seem similar to Google Photos implementation.
Now if you use OneDrive for work or school you will see something different. Instead, you will see recent files, shared libraries, and offline files. Previously Android OneDrive application showed a root view of all your files. If you miss the old layout you can actually get back to that by tapping the Files tab.
The new update also brings along improved support for 8K videos. Now Samsung users could always upload 8K videos with no compression. However, the new update brings support for the playback of these 8K videos. Devices from the Galaxy S20 and the S21 series will benefit from this.
Make sure you have 8K video turned on via your camera settings first though. Once you do that you will be able to upload your crisp 8K videos either manually to OneDrive. But you can also connect the Samsung Gallery app to Microsoft’s services. This will help people who are forgetful, or who just want it automatically done for them.

Samsung owners get even more benefits from this new update. Samsung owners will be able to now playback Motion Photos. Of course, the ability to store these Motion Photos has always been possible. But now playback of Motion Photos is also possible.
The new update also allows for easy sharing of Motion Photos with other OneDrive users. Now you can share your favorite photos easily with your loved ones and friends. However, if the users you share your photos with are Samsung users they can only play them back at OneDrive.com.
iOS users aren’t left out of the new update. They get the new home screen, but they do not have support for Samsung Motion Photos playback. OneDrive offers 5GB of storage for free or $1.99 per month for 100GB.
The new update could entice some Android users away from using Google Photos. Google decided to end their free unlimited storage in Google Photos. Because of this many consumers are looking for ways to store photos of their most cherished moments. Many may stick with Google Photos, but OneDrive seems to be attempting to make that decision harder.
