The Latest Update For Your Chromecast With Google TV Is Here

The latest update for the Chromecast with Google TV is here and with it are a very small handful of changes to take notice of, the biggest being the December 2020 security patch.
With the December 2020 security patch in play, your device will be a little less prone to issues. Though Google doesn’t really go into detail about what this patch is helping to protect against. At least not up front.
Still, security patches are there for a reason and you’re going to want to update your device when you get the chance. Lest you leave yourself open to potential threats down the line by having outdated software.
The Chromecast with Google TV December 2020 security update is 78MB
This isn’t a very large update so there’s likely not a whole lot here beyond the security fixes. There are a couple things of note though.
At around 78.20MB, the update contains the security patch from December as well as an update for the Chromecast with Google TV remote. It’s not immediately clear what the update for the remote includes, and since Google itself hasn’t announced any new features for the remote there probably aren’t any to speak of.
Though that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t install it. The main system update for the Chromecast dongle itself also appears to make the 4K60 support work better for some TV units. If you have had an issue with this device in that particular area, you might notice that things are working better after the update is complete.
Still no Stadia support
If you’re a gamer who owns one of these devices then you may be waiting on one thing and one thing in particular. Proper support for Stadia.
While it seems that some users may have been able to get Stadia working with this device over the past few months, proper support still hasn’t arrived. Google confirmed after the launch of the new Chromecast with Google TV that support would be coming at some point.
Speculation is that it should arrive sometime in 2021. But so far Google has only said that an update in the future would open up the capability to use the service.
This means that eventually users will be able to officially install the Stadia app without doing any workarounds. Which should make the setup a whole lot easier. For now, you’ll have to continue enjoying Stadia through your TV with the Chromecast Ultra.
