The Crown of Wu is a new action-adventure game from Red Mountain and Meridiem Games based on Chinese novel Journey to the West, and is shaping up to be a worthwhile title if you both love action-adventure games and games that revolve around Chinese mythology. It also stars the same main character as another game set in a similar setting, Black Myth: Wukong, which is set to release sometime in 2024.
The two games are not entirely alike. They do both have you, the player, controlling Sun Wukong as you fight to reach your goal while you progress through the story. They both also seem to feature difficult souls-like gameplay found in titles like Elden Ring. The Crown of Wu seems to be a slightly more forgiving style of action combat though, mixed with some platforming and puzzle solving. Both titles also have vastly different narratives, naturally. In addition to having many other unique traits.
But differences aside, there is a constant here that demands attention. Fun. The game looks fun and is quite visually appealing, just like Black Myth: Wukong. And best of all it launches today. Which means you have something to tide you over until Black Myth: Wukong gets its day in the sun.
The Crown of Wu is available on PS4, PS5, and PC
If you’re up to the challenge, you can grab the game starting today on three different platforms. PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam. The game is only $19.99 which appears to make it a pretty good value. Though we can’t be absolutely sure of that since we haven’t been able to test it yet. Still, based on the launch trailer alone, The Crown of Wu looks like it’ll be worth the money spent. Especially considering you may be looking at many hours of gameplay if it’s as challenging as the developers are making it out to be.
There’s also a Special Boxed Legend Edition available for PS5 that comes with some extras. However, it appears this is only available in Europe for now. Cost-wise it’s set at 29.99€ (Amazon Spain has it for 24.99€) so that should be around $30 if it ever gets an official US release.
