Call of Duty 2026 and 2027 rumors are "complete fiction"

Purported leaks for the 2026 and 2027 releases of Call of Duty are now deemed to be “complete fiction” according to a new report. If you missed the initial rumors, details on a pair of upcoming games from Activision’s Call of Duty franchise claimed to know the themes of the two releases said to be coming after next year’s 2025 title, which was rumored last year as potentially being a futuristic Black Ops 2 sequel.
With 2023’s Modern Warfare III well into season 3, the game’s lifecycle is now half over. Before long franchise fans will be preparing for the launch of this year’s game. Teased as the next Black Ops title based on an image shared by Microsoft for its upcoming Xbox Showcase. Anything beyond this year’s release is pretty unclear. However, this morning’s rumors were stating that the 2026 release would be set in the Call of Duty Ghosts universe developed by Infinity Ward. The release for 2027 would fall under Activision’s Advanced Warfare series and be developed by Sledgehammer Games.
As noted by Insider Gaming, those rumors were semi-believable. Because they partially stem from Call of Duty data miners who have been accurate on past Call of Duty leaks. But it seems the rumors from this morning are anything but accurate.
Call of Duty 2026 being set in the Ghosts universe is nothing but fiction
While datamining can often lead to leaks it’s important to note some key details about these rumors. In addition to the CoD universes they were supposed to be set in, the leaks also mention a codename for each project. The title for 2026 was codenamed “Devilwood” and the title for 2027 was codenamed “Anvil.”
There’s nothing that’s necessarily off about codenames. But as Insider Gaming notes, neither of these codenames could have been obtained from datamining. One of the dataminers, ‘Visceral,’ has also posted a follow-up tweet to the original (the original was deleted). Stating that the information is mixed up and that they aren’t sure if they’re simply wrong or were fed misinformation. The point is, that it’s a little early to start nailing down what Activision has planned for the Call of Duty franchise two and three years ahead.
The studio information may be accurate
One thing that could very well be true is which studios are handling those games. Activision cycles through studios each year with each new Call of Duty release. Infinity Ward was the main studio behind Modern Warfare II released in 2022. While Sledgehammer Games is the main studio behind Modern Warfare III.
And with this year suspected to be a new Black Ops title, Treyarch will probably be the main studio. That still leaves a gap for 2025 if Infinity Ward were to handle the release for 2026 before Activision cycles back to Sledgehammer Games for 2027.
Worth noting is that Activision doesn’t always cycle through each of the three studios before things come back around. So this year could be Treyarch, then it could move back to Sledgehammer, before moving on to Infinity Ward and back to Sledgehammer. All of this is of course, speculative. But it’s something to think about.
