Google is working on an AI Mode for Search

At this point, it’s tough to tell where Google ends and AI begins. The search giant has gone all in on AI technology, and it shows. According to some new reports, it looks like Google is working on a dedicated AI mode for its search engine.
It might seem odd that Google is doing this because it already has AI Overviews. That seems like an AI mode all itself, but this will be a bit different based on the reports.
AI Mode could make Google Search more like Gemini
We don’t have too much information about this feature, but what we know is that you’ll be able to activate AI mode when you get your results. Once you activate it, you’ll see an interface that will remind you of Gemini. This will give Google a more chatbot-like interface.
One thing about AI Mode might remind you of Perplexity. When you activate the mode, you’ll see the appropriate links to related webpages and there will also be an “Ask a follow-up” option. You might see that option below your chat responses.
In case you don’t know, Perplexity is an AI-powered search engine. When you make a search, you’ll see follow-up questions below the results. These will allow you to continue your search by asking relevant questions. Perplexity recently started a program where companies can pay to have follow-up questions lead to their websites.
Right now, we don’t know when Google will launch this mode or even if it will. Chances are that it will. We know that the company is crazy about AI technology, and it’s not shy about jamming it down our throats. From the reports, it looks like this feature will be pretty out of the way compared to AI Overviews. Google doesn’t provide a way to disable the Overviews, but it looks like you’ll need to manually choose to activate AI mode.
