Google made a dashcam app for Android Auto

Summary: Google has quietly developed a dashcam app for vehicles powered by Android Auto. The app is production-ready, and car manufacturers can easily integrate it into their vehicles. They can even customize the app as per their requirements.
Android Auto is perhaps the most popular operating system or platform for vehicles. Announced in 2017, the Android-based OS is now running on millions of cars across the globe. Apart from the OS, Google also offers a handful of applications for vehicles for this platform. Most recently, Google has created an open-source dashcam app for Android Auto.
Google’s Android Automotive Dashcam app is production-ready and customizable
According to a report, Google’s Dashcam application for cars powered by Android Auto is production-ready. Any car manufacturer can easily integrate this app into their vehicles or even customize it as per their requirements. The app allows vehicles to record their surroundings using their built-in cameras. Previously, Android Auto didn’t have a native dashcam app, but the newly made Google app will solve this problem.
As per Google’s official documentation, the Dashcam application integrates with AAOS (Android Automotive OS) to “give drivers video recording capabilities that enhance safety and security”. The app uses cameras available to Android Auto through either the EVS (Extended View System) or the Camera2 API.
Since it requires system-level permissions, car makers need to integrate it directly into the OS. Unfortunately, Google can’t distribute the app through app stores. That said, Google’s new Dashcam app certainly simplifies the integration of dashcam functionality for the vehicle manufacturers.
Google has also released the Android Auto 14.1 beta update
In related news, Google recently rolled out the Android Auto 14.1 beta update. The update brings many new features, including support for Android games. Android Auto now provides a list of games for you to enjoy.
However, you can only play these games when you park your car. Once the vehicle moves again, these games will be inaccessible. Google has designed Android game support for the platform for those moments when you spend a considerable amount of time parked.
