Huawei's Next Tri-Fold Leak Shows How It Plans to Rival Samsung

As we eagerly await the release of the much-hyped tri-fold smartphone from Samsung, it looks like the competition is on its way with premium hardware. The model we’re talking about from Huawei is presumably called the Mate XT 2. For those who missed it, Huawei Mate XT is the first commercially available tri-folding phone. The successor may arrive with some respectable upgrades.

Huawei Mate XT 2’s upgrades may include satellite communication

Tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo shared the alleged specifications of the Huawei Mate XT 2. These suggest some decent upgrades. The leak is based on a Chinese regulatory listing. A new Huawei phone, believed to be the Mate XT 2, reportedly appeared on the TENAA platform. The listing confirmed 5G connectivity and possibly even satellite communication.

Assuming it’s Mate XT 2, the listing shows the model number GRL-AL20, compared to GRL-AL10 in the Mate XT. The tri-folding phone may offer Tiantong satellite calling, similar to the Mate X5 and Mate XT models. Huawei previously used a specialized antenna layout to enable satellite features only when it’s fully unfolded. We’ll have to wait and see if this changes with the second-generation model.

The tri-fold phone may get a 50MP variable aperture camera

The Huawei Mate XT 2 may arrive with some nice upgrades over the original tri-fold. Digital Chat Station notes that the phone may feature the Kirin 9020 SoC. It could get a new 50MP large-pixel sensor with variable aperture support. Improvements to the periscope telephoto lens could also be in the offing.

Though the upgrades look minor, Huawei is a strong rival to Samsung, at least in the home market, China. The company already has the initial lead with the Mate XT. By the time Samsung is ready with its tri-fold, possibly called the Galaxy G Fold or Z TriFold, Huawei will look to take it on with the second-generation Mate XT. Meanwhile, Samsung’s tri-folding phone is believed to use the same chipset as the Galaxy S25—the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
