Snapdragon 8 Elite is Qualcomm’s current flagship chip for Android phones and tablets. This was a shift in naming strategy compared to the previous generation called Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Later this year, the brand will introduce its successor, presumably the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2. Now, a report suggests that both brandings may coexist as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 would be on the way.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 (Snapdragon 8s Elite) and 8 Elite 2 may coexist
Reliable leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo claims that the rumored SM8845 chip could debut as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of this chip. though. It’s the previously known as Snapdragon 8s Elite, Snapdragon 8 Plus, or even Snapdragon 8s Gen 5. For reference, the chip is tipped to equal Snapdragon 8 Elite performance.
Meanwhile, the SM8850, which is also in the works, may debut as the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2. This means the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will sit right below it. This is an interesting development that, if it pans out, should better distinguish Elite-level flagships SoCs.
The use of “Elite” branding on the next flagship chip made sense. According to leaks, it could be the first in the series to integrate custom Oryon cores. However, it seems Qualcomm continues to complicate its moniker policy for its chips.
It’s noteworthy that the current Snapdragon 8 Elite was initially expected to arrive as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. As a matter of fact, the early production runs of the Realme GT 7 Pro had references to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 branding. But things took a turn.
Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 may not arrive anytime soon
Qualcomm will hold its Snapdragon Summit 2025 between September 23rd and 25th. This is when the company will introduce its next-gen Snapdragon X Series laptop SoCs and Snapdragon Elite phone chips.
