Control your kids' PlayStation interactions with the new family app

Parental controls are available in just about anything related to online interaction these days, for a good reason, and Sony is now making it easier to manage what your kids do online with the new PlayStation family app. Launched on September 10, the PlayStation family app hosts a wide array of different management controls for people with kids who have access to the home console.

The app, which is available on both Android and iOS devices as of this week, offers several features to help safeguard your children’s online PSN activity. Most notably, it has guided onboarding for parents so they aren’t struggling to figure out what to do when trying to set things up. More importantly, just about everything about a child’s account can be set up through this app, from profile name to the allowed duration for playtime. It’s pretty thorough in its approach to setting up parental controls.

The new PlayStation family app sends you real-time notifications and lets you view activity reports

The nice thing about these kinds of apps and app controls is that it’s not easy to get around them. The PlayStation family app will send you real-time notifications when your kid is playing games. Kids can make requests to play beyond their designated limits, and parents can approve or deny those requests from the app.

You can also view activity reports. So, if you missed a notification, you can still go back and look at the times your kid played and was online. Speaking of playtime, you can set playtime limits from the app as well. In fact, that’s something you should be able to do from the initial setup process. It’s also possible to set up content filters and manage spending.

In just a few taps, parents can choose age-appropriate content for their kids and change this on a whim if ever needed. With regard to the spending limits, these can be changed as well. Plus, parents have the capability to add funds to the wallet. This app seems like a pretty essential thing for any household that has a PS5 or PS4 in the house. Especially since it’s free.
