Popular music streaming app Spotify recently gained the most anticipated lossless audio feature, which is free to premium users. This is the highest quality music that’ll cater to a niche audience. This is easily the most requested feature, that’s also been in development for a while. Now that it is here, Spotify is rolling out new improvements to the free tier, including the ability to pick any song you want.
Spotify’s update to the free tier allows you to pick any song you like
Spotify notes that three new ways the ad-supported tier can access the specific song they want to listen to without shuffling. One is Pick & Play to choose any song from the interface, including your library. Next is Search & Play to use the app’s search function to search for your favorite track. Lastly, Share & Play to listen to a Spotify song link shared by friends or artists.
The ability to listen to the song you wish gives it an edge over other services like Pandora, which only has the option to listen to podcasts.
There are certain limitations, though
Spotify free tier users can create or listen to audio playlists, listen to podcasts, and design custom artwork. The latter lets you “add your stamp to your playlist covers” with unique images, colors, text effects, and graphic elements. However, there are certain limitations to the free account. For instance, you can only listen to one song at a time before the app shuffles. This restriction means you cannot listen to whole albums.
It’s also possible you’re still limited to six skips every hour, and the best quality rate could be at 160kbps. In comparison, Premium users can listen to lossless music at up to 24-bit/44KH quality. They also get access to audiobooks, a new messaging feature, and an AI DJ. The new free tier update is available for both iOS and Android.
