When Apple announced the iPhone 16e this year, many mocked it. It was overpriced for what it offered. But to everyone’s surprise, it turned out to be yet another hit iPhone. That said, Apple might break the streak next year. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is set to disappoint fans with the iPhone 17e.
iPhone 17e might disappoint
As Gurman points out, one of the reasons the iPhone 16e actually performed as well as it did is because the differences between it and the base iPhone 16 are almost negligible. Or at least not big enough to justify spending an extra $200. This meant that the iPhone 16e was a clear winner for those looking to get their foot into Apple’s ecosystem.
However, that might change with the iPhone 17e, which could disappoint budget Apple shoppers. You see, Apple made some huge changes with the iPhone 17 over its predecessor. Putting the chipset aside, Apple gave the base iPhone 17 a screen upgrade. We’re talking about a larger display, a smoother display, and a brighter display. There’s also an upgrade in storage, where the base model starts at 256GB versus 128GB of the iPhone 16.
Sure, it costs $100 more, but those are upgrades that definitely feel worth it. This means that unless Apple plans to close the gap between the specs of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e, the disparity means that customers might end up flocking to the base iPhone 17 instead. We’re not sure if that’s what Apple had in mind, but that’s the situation the company has found itself in.
What do we know about the iPhone 17e?
So far, not much is known about the iPhone 17e. According to the rumors, it is expected to ship with the A19 chipset. This is the same chipset that Apple is using for the base iPhone 17. It is also rumored to continue using a display with a 60Hz refresh rate. It will sport a single 48MP camera and a 12MP front-facing shooter. So, save for the chipset, the rest of the phone feels more like the iPhone 16e. This means that justifying the upgrade to the base iPhone 17 makes more sense than ever.
In any case, we won’t have to wait too long to find out. Last we heard, Apple plans to launch the iPhone 17e in the spring of 2026. This is roughly a year after the iPhone 16e.
