Earlier this morning, Microsoft announced an increase in the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but one thing that is likely to be overlooked is the updates to Xbox cloud gaming, which include an improvement in the resolution.
Most notably, Xbox cloud gaming has always been available in a beta state, even though it’s been available for more than a few years now. Today, Microsoft has confirmed that the beta tag is being removed from the cloud gaming feature. It’s now fully available in a 1.0 rollout, if you will. This is good news for anyone who enjoys the cloud gaming aspect of Xbox Game Pass. That being said, there are multi-layered aspects to this. Some of it is great, some of it is likely not so great. It all depends on what you value.
Xbox cloud gaming will now be able to stream in 1440p resolution, but not for everyone
The great news with the cloud gaming feature coming out of beta is that it includes a resolution bump to 1440p, but only for those who are subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Which, as you know by now, has increased to $30 a month. A price that a lot of current subscribers won’t be willing to pay.
However, there is some other good news. Xbox cloud gaming is also now available on both the Essential and Premium tiers of the Game Pass service. So, for $9.99 a month or $14.99 a month, you can now stream games to your phone, TV, tablet, or any other device that cloud gaming has previously worked on. You won’t get the 1440p resolution. Wait times will be slightly longer, too. However, you also won’t have to pay double or more than double the monthly cost of those two lower-tier plans.
If you’re ok with the Ultimate tier price jump and plan to pay it, there are other details worth noting. The 1440p resolution is only available for certain games and on certain devices right now. So, keep that in mind as you go to launch a game.
