Microsoft has just implemented a price increase for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, little more than a year after it increased the price from $16.99 to $19.99, and it’s safe to say that there are plenty of gamers who aren’t necessarily happy about it.
In an official Xbox Wire post on October 1, Microsoft announced a whole host of changes coming to its Xbox Game Pass service as a whole. All three tiers will be getting some adjustments, but the Ultimate tier is the only one getting a price increase. This shouldn’t come across as too surprising, given Microsoft’s decision to significantly increase the price of the Xbox Series X earlier this year. Regardless, it’s the amount of the increase that seems to concern users.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will now cost $29.99 a month, but it doesn’t have to
Whether or not you agree with Microsoft’s decision to increase the price of the Ultimate tier, the fact of the matter is that it’s happening. And unless there’s so much backlash, Microsoft decides to revert the change, or lessen the price increase a little bit, then this is the new monthly price most gamers will have to pay if they want to keep the service.
Thankfully, there’s a way around it. Aside from cancelling your Game Pass subscriptions altogether or moving to a lower tier, you can grab the 1-month passes on Amazon. As of right now, Amazon is still selling the 1-month Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions for $19.99. You can grab these and apply them to your account. This seems to work for now, though it’s unclear if Microsoft will make some changes to force people to pay the difference.
It’s also worth noting that these may eventually go out of stock. So, if you want to keep Game Pass Ultimate at its lower $20 price, you might want to grab the passes off Amazon while you can.

How is Microsoft justifying this price change?
The price change is being justified by Microsoft by adding more games to the library. It’s also the only tier that has access to 75+ day one games. Additionally, it offers Ubisoft+ Classics and EA Play. It’ll be adding Fortnite Crew next month as well. Microsoft also confirms that cloud gaming has the best quality and the shortest wait times on the Ultimate tier.
That being said, cloud gaming, which used to be exclusive to Game Pass Ultimate, is now available on the Premium and Essential tiers. If you don’t care about the highest visual quality or the wait times, or the day one games, then you can save yourself some money every month.
