Samsung Galaxy XR Headset Set to Launch in Late October

Samsung is signaling its full-fledged entry into the extended reality (XR) market. Reports indicate the company is preparing to launch its highly anticipated XR device, known internally as Project Muhan. More specifically, Samsung’s Android XR-powered headset official unveiling expected in the third week of October. This launch represents a significant moment, as the headset, likely to be called the Galaxy XR, is the first major device built on the new Android XR platform.

As reported by South Korean media, the company plans to open pre-registration sign-ups on October 15.

Samsung Galaxy XR headset: A three-way Android powerhouse

The Galaxy XR is the result of a powerful collaboration across the Android ecosystem. Samsung, which handled the overall design and integration, partnered with two essential industry leaders. Firs, Qualcomm is supplying the chipset, ensuring the device has the necessary processing power for demanding XR environments. Then, Google developed the core Android XR platform, providing the operating system foundation that other Android manufacturers will utilize for their own headsets.

This three-way partnership ensures the Galaxy XR has a deep software and hardware integration right out of the gate.

Focusing on comfort and AI

Samsung is positioning its headset as a strong alternative to existing high-end mixed-reality devices, particularly Apple’s Vision Pro. A key focus area for the Galaxy XR is user comfort. Samsung President Roh Tae-Moon has highlighted the device’s good weight and wearing comfort. He also boasts a refined user experience driven by voice control.

This emphasis on comfort and usability is a direct response to the market reception of competing devices. For instance, the Vision Pro was criticized for its high price ($3,500) and substantial weight (around 600g).

While details on price and exact specifications remain guarded, expectations place the Galaxy XR in a premium bracket—likely over $2,000—but strategically positioned to be cheaper than its Apple counterpart.

Pre-registrations for the Galaxy XR will run for one week, starting on October 15. This will lead up to the expected official launch date around October 21/22. The device is expected to be offered in limited markets initially, making the pre-registration period crucial for early adopters. This debut will determine how successfully the Android ecosystem can compete in the burgeoning market for advanced, personal computing eyewear.

In recent news, Apple has reportedly taken a radical turn in its Vision headsets. A recent report claims the company has halted development of a cheaper variant of the Apple Vision Pro in favor of lighter and more affordable AI smart glasses.
