Members Newsletter – October 2025
Dear Open Source Initiative supporters,
Welcome to our OSI October newsletter. In this edition we’ll share how we spent our September and highlight our upcoming October activities. As always, if you’re interested in more information about anything we’re working on, just drop us a note.
As summer closes and we return to the quieter rhythm of fall, I’m particularly grateful for the support of our community, industry, universities and civil society organizations supporting and amplifying our work. In August I accepted an invitation from the OSI board to work with outgoing Executive Director Stefano Maffulli, making way for the board to begin the process of searching for their next executive director. I’ve personally committed the coming months to supporting the OSI team and our stakeholders as Interim ED. The board has established a search committee and expects to open a public search later this month.
Stefano’s final project on OSI’s behalf – Deep Dive: Data Governance – was an extraordinary gathering and exchange by notable practitioners, researchers, and project leads. The event followed months of work on the part of a range of civil society stakeholders that formed the program committee and reviewed hundreds of submitted papers. I learned so much about work underway from others by sitting in on the three days of virtual sessions, and we look forward to sharing the recordings with you soon so you can too.
I’ll be attending All Things Open in Raleigh, NC later this month. If you’re there too and would like to talk with me about how you can help with OSI’s mission or just float an idea, come look me up!
Deborah Bryant
Interim Executive Director, OSI

OSI charts next phase for the organization with executive director search
The Open Source Initiative (OSI) will begin searching for a new executive director as Stefano Maffulli departs in October to focus on Open Source AI and data governance.
Keep changing: How Open Source has to continually evolve
Parting message from OSI ED Stefano Maffulli
Leading OSI as executive director for a four-year term has centered me in the modern era of Open Source, where regulation has a stronger role for collaboration and impact. I’ll still be part of this movement—Join me in exploring the broader set of challenges in bringing these values to those still unfamiliar with open source and struggling to understand AI.
