The Expensive Galaxy Z Fold 7 Surpasses Z Flip 7 In Pre-Orders

Samsung‘s newest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, have just wrapped up their pre-order period. Early data from South Korea reveals an unexpected trend. For the first time in years, the premium, book-style Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is reportedly receiving more pre-orders than the more affordable—and usually more popular—Z Flip series.

The report comes from the South Korean outlet The Financial News. According to the source, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 accounts for around 60% of pre-orders for Samsung’s 2025 foldables. Meanwhile, the Z Flip 7 (including the FE model) makes up the remaining 40%. This is a notable shift from previous years. For example, last year the Z Flip 6 captured 60% of pre-orders compared to the Z Fold 6’s 40%. The difference was even more notable with the Z Fold 5, which only secured 30% against the Z Flip 5’s dominant 70%.

Historically, the Z Flip’s lower price point and familiar clamshell design made it the accessible choice for many. The Z Fold, while offering a larger unfolding screen for productivity, was often seen as a niche device. These devices were also facing stiffer competition from Chinese foldable brands.

So, what’s driving this change? Analysts suggest that the significant upgrades packed into the Galaxy Z Fold 7 are a key factor. The new model boasts a slimmer design, a wider cover screen that’s more usable as a traditional phone, and improved camera hardware. It’s also touted as the lightest foldable phone on the market at 215g. The handset is even lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra and remarkably thin when folded (8.9mm). These enhancements address some of the previous generations’ biggest drawbacks. So, this year’s Fold 7 is much more attractive and convenient for daily use.

A trend in Korea that is set to be repeated globally

It’s noteworthy that these figures are specific to the Korean market. However, the substantial improvements in the Z Fold 7 could indicate a broader global trend. The industry is now watching to see if all phones in the 2025 “Z” series combined can surpass the 1.02 million preorders achieved by Samsung’s 2023 foldables. It seems that foldables are finally ceasing to be a niche. Perhaps soon, it will be as common to see people using foldable devices as with traditional smartphones.
