Verizon has reportedly violated the patent laws by infringing on the patent of Headwater Research. It is now ordered to pay a whopping $175 million in fines to the concerned party. What’s more interesting is the patent itself. It could’ve made our smartphone user experience better.
Verizon loses patent battle against Headwater Research
Headwater Research is a Texas-based tech incubator that focuses on mobile phones and the cloud infrastructure that supports our smartphones. The firm had developed a wireless technology that was meant to reduce data usage, improve network congestion, and improve the battery life of the smartphone. It was legally patented by the research firm.
However, the patented technology was shared with Verizon under a non-disclosure agreement between 2009-2011. But Verizon has allegedly used the tech on its digital devices and network without obtaining a legal permission or license. Headwater Research then filed a legal suit against Verizon Wireless.
Verizon denies the claim and wants to file an appeal
After listening to both sides, the federal jury of Texas orders Verizon to pay $175 million in damages to Headwater Research for the patent infringement. Verizon has, however, denied the allegations by claiming that the patent was invalid. And that the jury members’ decision is not backed by facts. It intends to file an appeal.
Interestingly, the same court had previously ordered Samsung to pay $278.7 million fine for infringing the patent of the same Headwater Research. The South Korean tech giant also denied the verdict and said that it will file an appeal against it.
Headwater Research is headed by Dr. Gregory Raleigh. And just to mention, he’s the person behind several key innovations in the smartphone industry. The MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology that’s used in almost every 4G and 5G network is his work only. He has some notable work in the field of network virtualization, mobile phones, and software.
