iPhone 17 Air's Thinness Pursuit Will Compromise Graphic Power

The launch of the iPhone 17 series is just over three weeks away at this point. The lineup is rumored to get a new ultra-slim model in the form of the iPhone 17 Air. This will replace the ‘Plus’ branded iPhone. As the announcement nears, we’re coming across quite a few details of the phone. Recently, the alleged battery image surfaced online. Now, the latest leak claims the iPhone 17 Air will feature the A19 Pro chip, much like the Pro versions, but with compromises to the GPU section.

iPhone 17 Air may get one less GPU core

Weibo tipster FixedFocus claims that the iPhone 17 Air will feature the A19 Pro chip. This could be a significant upgrade over the previous A18 Pro SoC and should translate into strong real-world performance. However, there’s some bad news. The A19 Pro version inside the iPhone 17 Air will use a 5-core GPU unit, which is apparently one less core than the variant that’ll be present inside the iPhone 17 Pro models.

If a hardcore gaming experience is your thing, you’re better off picking the more expensive Pro variants. The new Air should appeal to people who value beautifully slim designs. So, the reduced GPU core might not have a big impact on the daily use of the target audience of the iPhone 17 Air.

The battery and display won’t be as good as Pro models

Apple appears to be using a downclocked GPU for the iPhone 17 Air to maintain the slimness while also managing thermals. On the positive side of things, Apple appears to be using a Pro variant of its chipset (A19 Pro) for the iPhone 17 Air and not the regular A19, which could power the standard iPhone 17.

Additionally, the Weibo post mentions that the battery and display of the iPhone 17 Air are not as good as the iPhone 17 Pro. Leaks claim the phone may get a much lower 2,900mAh cell, which is about 2.49mm in thickness. Meanwhile, the Pro Max variant is rumored to reach up to a 5,000mAh cell.
