US-bound PS5 units are made outside of China to keep costs low

The PS5 has remained stable at its US price since the console was first released, and for now, it’s going to stay that way thanks to the manufacturing of those units now happening outside of China. Elsewhere around the globe, Sony has already raised the prices of the PS5 to account for changing market factors. When the tariffs were put into place earlier this year, many thought it would impact the price of the PS5 in the US. A price increase has become a possibility, but nothing has changed as of yet. So, prices will stay the same for the foreseeable future.

Sony recently spoke about this topic during its first-quarter earnings call. This is good news for anyone who doesn’t already own a PS5 or PS5 Pro. Especially, since the cost of the former usually goes for $499 with the disc drive. That’s not as expensive as the PS5 Pro, but it’s not super duper cheap either. So, the last thing some consumers are going to want to see is that price going up.

PS5 units headed for the US have their manufacturing done outside of China

In the initial report, which was translated by Seeking Alpha (via Wccftech), Sony CFO Lin Tao states that manufacturing for US-bound units has already been transferred outside of China. Tao doesn’t appear to mention anything about where the manufacturing has been transferred to. Nevertheless, the transfer has been completed, and consoles are being put together elsewhere. This is helping Sony avoid (to some degree) the impact of the tariffs. In turn, this should help it keep the cost of the PS5 and PS5 Pro in the US at their current amounts. Whether or not they stay at those prices until the end of their lifecycle is unclear.

Despite the price increases in a few countries, the PS5 is still doing well for Sony. Earlier this month, it was reported that the PS5 had surpassed 80 million units shipped. That’s still below the PS4 by this time in its lifecycle, but that doesn’t take away from the success of the PS5. The PlayStation brand seems as strong as ever.
