Former Twitter staff may finally get severance as Elon Musk edges toward settlement

When Elon Musk bought the popular social media platform Twitter, the first thing he did was fire employees. He removed nearly 80% of the total workforce as the new administration was apparently targeting ‘sustainability.’ However, the former employees later filed a lawsuit against the billionaire, accusing him of not releasing the severance pay. But as we move forward, a settlement between Elon Musk’s X and Twitter ex-workers is likely in the coming days.

A settlement between Elon Musk’s X and the former Twitter employees is on the way

As mentioned earlier, when Twitter (now, X) was taken over by Elon Musk, he fired nearly 6,000 employees. These employees accounted for as much as 80% of the total workforce. The new administration offered the affected employees up to three months of severance pay.

However, it is not as straightforward as it seems. Several ex-employees allege that they did not receive full severance pay, while some report that they did not receive any payments at all. A group of employees also argues that the severance pay offered was much lower than what they had been guaranteed.

Affected employees might soon get their pending severance pay

As per the original policy of Twitter, employees were promised up to 6 months of base pay, alongside one week of pay per year of service in case of layoffs. The employees subsequently filed the lawsuit against Elon Musk, led by X. Unexpectedly, a U.S. District Judge ruled in favour of Musk. He ruled that he did not honor the severance agreements that these employees had entered into with Twitter.

The employees later filed an appeal against the ruling. The hearing for it is scheduled for September 17 this year. But before the hearing beings, one court filing reveals that Elon Musk led X and Twitter ex-employees have requested the court to delay the hearing so that both parties can work on a ‘settlement.’
