Multiple reports have suggested that Apple will launch its first foldable iPhone next year. Major Android phone makers already joined the fray years ago, and Apple will finally board the bandwagon in 2026. The device reportedly entered the testing phase last month. Now, a new report has revealed key details about the features of the handset. In a report for Bloomberg, Mark Gurman suggests that the first foldable iPhone will have a Touch ID sensor, among other things.
The first foldable iPhone will be a book-style device and feature a Touch ID sensor
According to Gurman, the first foldable iPhone, code-named V68, will be Apple’s first major shift in design in years. It will sport a book-style folding format similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold range of devices. Also, Apple is moving from on-cell to in-cell display technology to minimize creases and improve responsiveness.
Apple’s iPhones have shifted to Face ID sensors for security. However, Apple may revive the Touch ID sensor for the first foldable iPhone. The Cupertino tech giant could integrate the security feature into the power button or on the side of the device to keep the frame slim. The Touch ID sensor has a much smaller component, which makes it the obvious choice to shave off a few centimeters of a device that’s bulkier than regular iPhones.
Say hello to four cameras, say goodbye to the SIM card slot
Furthermore, Gurman predicts that the first foldable iPhone will offer as many as four cameras. There will be one on the first, one inside the folding screen, and two on the back. Most foldables on the market also offer a largely similar camera configuration.
Apple currently sells iPhones in either an eSIM-only configuration or with a physical SIM card slot, which depends on the region. However, with the foldable model, Apple is shifting to an eSIM-only configuration. Gurman also claims that Apple will equip the folding phone with its own second-gen C2 modem, the same chip rumored for the iPhone 18 range.
Additionally, Gurman says Apple’s suppliers have already started working on the first foldable iPhone. The company has plans to ramp up production in early next year for a possible fall launch. Although Apple hasn’t finalized the phone’s design yet, the company plans to offer it in white, black, light blue, and light gold color variants.
