The potential of advanced technology in electronic devices continues to improve day by day. Reports indicate we could see an iPhone 20 with Tandem OLED display as early as 2028. New Apple Insider and Dealsite reports claim that LG Display is making significant progress in bringing this tech to iPhones. Tandem OLED stacks two OLED panels on top of each other. This stacking results in an increase in brightness, without diluting the benefits of OLED displays.
Are Tandem OLED displays new?
Tandem OLED displays are not new in the industry. Apple already has a product in the market with that display: the 2024 iPad Pro Ultra with Retina XDR display. LG Display supplied most of the panels, while Samsung filled up the remaining quota.

This news, however, is for a possible appearance of the same display in an iPhone. Apple Insider reports that this could be the iPhone 20, debuting in 2028. This gives LG Display enough time to refine and address any internal challenges.
Tandem OLED in an iPhone brings improved brightness and more
Tandem OLED brings increased brightness, low heat emission, and longer-lasting screens over regular OLED displays. First, tandem OLED could usher in an all-glass iPhone, according to an earlier report. While this connection is subjective, it feels like a natural fit.
Another area that the iPhone will benefit from is in improved brightness. iPhones already boast excellent brightness, peaking at 2,000 nits outdoors on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. If regular OLED displays alone achieved that level of brightness, imagine two stacked panels. On the iPad Pro with Tandem OLED, brightness peaks at 1,000 nits and 1,600 nits for HDR content, sustained over extended use. On a smaller device like the iPhone, the results would be quite impressive.
Could we see the Tandem OLED display in an iPhone soon, or even the Simplified Tandem OLED that promises the same enhancements? No doubt, an iPhone 20 Tandem OLED will change the outlook for the iPhone for years to come.
