However, some users have encountered a frustrating bug that’s leaving them in silence. The Android 16 notification sound bug on Pixel phones
The issue has been reported by multiple Pixel owners on Google’s official Issue Tracker. It is surprisingly specific: new notifications are completely silent if there is already a notification waiting in your dropdown menu on devices running Android 16. So, if you receive one alert and don’t immediately clear it, all subsequent alerts from any app will be completely silent. This has created a major problem for users who rely on timely sounds for everything. Keep in mind that there are more delicate use cases, such as notifications for smart home cameras or even vital health monitors.
The notification sound bug seems to affect a range of Pixel phones from the 6 series all the way up to the Pixel 10 lineup—basically, every Pixel device compatible with Android 16. Some users have even resorted to third-party apps as a temporary workaround, without any success.
A fix is ready for a next update
The good news is that Google is already aware of the problem. On August 7, the company confirmed on its Issue Tracker that they have a fix for the bug. They will ship it with the next “quarterly release” update. This is a relief for many, though it still leaves a bit of uncertainty as to exactly when the fix will land. The next quarterly update (QPR1) will arrive later this month. Meanwhile, Pixel owners will get the QPR2 update sometime in December.
For now, the best workaround is simply to clear out your notification shade regularly. While it’s an annoying extra step, it will ensure you hear all of your incoming alerts until Google deploys the patch.
