When Sony first launched the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition way back in 2020, the storage amount on both units was 825GB via the internal SSD. You only really had about 667GB at your disposal, but the entire amount was 825GB, which was advertised on the box.
When Sony came out with the PS5 Slim model and the removable disc drive, both the Digital Edition and Disc Edition were bumped up to 1TB of storage. Fast forward to today, and Sony is now looking to drop the Digital Edition down to 825GB again. The reason is clear. It’s reportedly to keep the cost down on the console. Sony increased the price of the PS5 across the globe as a result of changing market conditions. The US was the most recent region to see those price increases. Sony reportedly wants to keep the cost of the consoles down, so it’s decreasing the storage amount on the Digital Edition. The version with the disc drive will stay at 1TB, however. This change also may not take place everywhere.
The PS5 Digital Edition storage is only decreasing in Europe, for now
Details of the storage changes haven’t officially been announced by Sony yet. However, these changes have been leaked. As reported by Billbil-kun of Dealabs (via Wccftech), Sony is coming out with a revision of the Digital Edition console that comes with a smaller SSD capacity. The revised version of the console is being released on September 13 in Europe. So far, this is the only region mentioned, so it may not spread to other regions. The price will also stay at the current increased price of €499. So, you’re getting less for more. Not a good look.
Billbil-kun says Sony is doing this to keep production costs down. That may be the case, but it isn’t going to make consumers happy. Not when they could go out and buy the Digital Edition right now for the same €499 and get the extra storage. That being said, if you haven’t picked up a PS5 yet, now is probably the time if you live in Europe. Assuming you want the Digital Edition. Because starting in ten days, you’ll get less storage.
